Detective Patrick Franzone
Freeport Police Department

Patrick Franzone is a decorated Freeport Police Officer/Detective. He has received dozens of awards for excellent police duty, including: Police Officer of the Quarter from the Nassau/Suffolk Shields Awards; Nassau Police Conference Meritorious Award; Town of Hempstead Police Service Award; Lynbrook Elks Exceptional Performance of Duty Award; and the Freeport Police Dept. Lt Raymond Knipe Award for Exceptional Police Service.

Patrick is the President and Founder of Toys For Freeport Tots, a 501 (c) 3 organization, and the PROUD father of three sons: Kyle, Kieran and Conor.

Patrick moved to Freeport at the age of 9 and was a graduate of Freeport High School in 1985. After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. As an active duty Marine, Patrick served all across the United States including Puerto Rico and overseas in Sicily and Turkey. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant while in the Marines.

In October 1990 Patrick was sworn in as a Freeport Police Officer where he has been employed ever since. In 1993 he became the Freeport Police Benevolent Association’s Recording Secretary and served on the PBA’s Executive board as Secretary and Treasurer for seven years. During this time, he collected new toys during the Christmas season through the Freeport PBA to assist the United States Marine Corps Toys For Tots program.

After a few years of collecting toys for the Marines, Patrick felt that he and the Freeport PBA could better serve Freeport by collecting and purchasing those toys for Freeport families in need. This was the beginning of the Toys For Freeport Tots program. Working in conjunction with the social workers at Freeport Schools, local religious leaders and the Freeport Police Department, Patrick and the Toys for Freeport Tots program have provided thousands of Freeport families in need with holiday toys for their children.

Throughout the year Patrick coordinates fundraisers to support these efforts. The largest of these yearly events is named Kyle Fest to honor the life of his oldest son, Kyle, who was born with microcephaly and passed away in 2009 at the age of 19. This year, Toys For Freeport Tots purchased over $25,000 in new toys which were distributed to over 500 needy families.

When needed, Patrick’s efforts have extended beyond toys. He recently raised additional monies to purchase new musical instruments for the Atkinson and Freeport HS music programs. In 2018, he spearheaded a fundraiser to purchase high quality hearing aids for a 12 year old student from Atkinson School who was deaf in both ears.

For the past three years, Patrick has personally ensured that South Shore Child Guidance Center receives an abundance of toys for children and families served at our agency. His support has brightened the holidays for hundreds of children in our care and enabled staff to include the gift of a special toy for each child at our annual children’s holiday party.

For his steadfast commitment to serving the Freeport community, and for his generous support of the children and families served by South Shore Child Guidance Center, it is our privilege to recognize Detective Patrick Franzone with the 2020 South Shore Child Guidance Center Community Service Award.
