Our mission is to create a place that inspires wonder — where people of all ages can playfully explore nature, art, science and history.
Arm-of-the-Sea Theater is in the process of transforming the ruins of a water-powered paper mill into an inspirational center for arts, science and local history. The site is located on the Esopus Creek in Saugerties NY, adjacent to Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park — where we’ve been staging our annual Esopus Creek Puppet Suite for nearly two decades. Now we’re creating a cultural park and visitors center designed to convey the multilayered story of this extraordinary place.
The Tidewater Center will offer place-based programs and provide public fishing access to the tidal Esopus Creek. The site will also serve as an incubator for Arm-of-the-Sea’s new performance works. Like the Saugerties Lighthouse, it will be a special portal to the aquatic realm, welcoming local residents and visitors alike.
Our skilled team of Makers & Shakers have developed a phased, master plan which includes:
- A performing arts space
- A waterworks playground
- An aquatic classroom for river education
- Public access to tidewater fishing
- Staging areas for citizen-science projects
Kayak launch & way-station for water travelers
Please join with us in bringing this one-of-a-kind waterfront revitalization project to fruition!
