Sean T. Hwang, M.D.
Epilepsy Specialist, Attending Neurologist
"People with epilepsy are faced with making complicated decisions about their healthcare every day. I am dedicated to educating each individual about the important latest medical and surgical advancements available to them. It is my role to insure patients are fully informed about the potential impact these therapies may have on their overall physical and mental well-being, and to optimize their treatment plans. As an epileptologist, I specialize in the treatment of seizures, the interpretation of electrophysiologic studies, operative planning, and cortical mapping. My research interests involve the interaction between epilepsy and behavior."
Sean T. Hwang, MD joined the Northwell Health System in 2008 and is an attending physician in the Division of EEG & Epilepsy. Dr. Hwang is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Hwang earned his MD from Tufts University, and completed his residency in neurology at Stanford University Medical Center before completing a two year fellowship in EEG & Epilepsy at Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Hwang is member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and the American Epilepsy Society. He is also a member of the Long Island Epilepsy Foundation Professional Advisory Board. Dr. Hwang is currently board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Hwang specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of seizures, the interpretation of neurophysiologic studies, operative planning for epilepsy surgery, and in performing functional cortical mapping. Dr. Hwang’s research interests also involve studying the interaction between epilepsy and behavior.
Dr. Hwang is the Hofstra Northwell EEG site director of the ACGME approved clinical neurophysiology fellowship program, and is closely involved with the training of the fellows and formulation of the curriculum. His duties at North Shore Hospital also include supervision and instruction of the general neurology residents, as well as participating in the education of the medical students on rotation with the department.
Dr. Hwang understands the impact of epilepsy on all aspects of a patient’s life and treats the whole patient with a combination of clinical expertise and compassion. He is active in EPIC Long Island’s Professional Advisory Board and supports our efforts to further education, training and awareness. For his professional and personal contributions to the advancement of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment, EPIC Long Island is proud to recognize Dr. Hwang with the Professional Leadership Award.
